China's exports of textiles, clothing, footwear and luggage to Africa have grown steadily

In 2022, China's textile and apparel exports to African countries totaled 20.8 billion US dollars, an increase of 28% over 2017. Under the impact of the epidemic in 2020, the total export volume was still slightly higher than the level of 2017 and 2018, and reached a historical best level of 21.6 billion US dollars in 2021.


South Africa, a major sub-Saharan economy, imports 13% more textiles and clothing from China than Egypt, one of the five North African countries. In 2022, China's textile and apparel exports to South Africa amounted to US $2.5 billion, of which knitted clothing (61 categories) and woven clothing (62 categories) products amounted to US $820 million and US $670 million, respectively, ranking 9th and 11th in China's comprehensive export trade volume of goods to South Africa.


China's export of footwear products to Africa has achieved a high growth even in 2020, when the epidemic is more severe, and is expected to maintain a good growth momentum in the future. In 2022, China's export of footwear products to Africa (64 categories) reached 5.1 billion US dollars, an increase of 45% over 2017.


The top five countries for exports are: South Africa at $917 million, Nigeria at $747 million, Kenya at $353 million, Tanzania at $330 million, and Ghana at $304 million.


China's exports of these products to South Africa ranked fifth in the total trade volume of goods, up 47% from 2017.


Under the impact of the epidemic in 2020, China's exports of luggage products (42 categories) to Africa totaled 1.31 billion US dollars, slightly lower than the levels of 2017 and 2018. With the recovery of market demand and consumption, China's exports of luggage products to African countries reached a record high in 2022, with a total export value of 1.88 billion US dollars, an increase of 41% over 2017.


The top five countries for exports are: South Africa at $392 million, Nigeria at $215 million, Kenya at $177 million, Ghana at $149 million, and Tanzania at $110 million.


China's exports of such products to South Africa ranked 15th in the value of comprehensive goods trade, an increase of 40% over 2017.
